“When You Wish Upon a Star” Concert to Illuminate Macky with Beloved Disney Jazz Standards

Get ready to be transported into a world where Disney magic meets the timeless rhythms of jazz. On October 6th, the Artist Series presents an extraordinary celebration of Disney’s century-long legacy in an enchanting evening of jazz music in Macky Auditorium. Taking its name from the iconic “Pinocchio” tune, “When You Wish Upon a Star” promises an unforgettable night of musical reverie, blending the iconic melodies of beloved Disney classics with the spirited improvisations of jazz.

A Swinging Centenary of Disney Magic

Marking a milestone that’s as heartwarming as a Disney tale itself, the concert is a centenary tribute to 100 years of Disney magic. From Snow White to Toy Story, the time-honored music of Disney’s animated world have been reimagined and rejuvenated by jazz luminaries such as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck. The concert’s program will feature a captivating journey through the annals of Disney cinema, breathing new life into beloved jazz standards like “Someday My Prince Will Come,” “He’s a Tramp,” “Everybody Wants to be a Cat” and “The Bare Necessities.”

The Maestros of the Mouse

Taking the stage for this exceptional night will be the newly assembled house band of The National Jazz Museum in Harlem, led by pianist and musical director Sean Mason. Vocalists Kim Nalley and Sasha Dobson join the ranks to bring these cherished Disney tunes to life with their unique interpretations.

Backing the vocalists is an ensemble of musicians who bring a wealth of expertise to the performance. Ahmad Johnson will be on drums, Corentin Le Hir will handle the bass and Alicyn Yaffee will provide the melodious strums of the guitar. Trumpeter Anthony Hervey will add his golden notes to the mix, creating a symphony of sound that is sure to stir the soul.

Together, this talented group will imbue beloved melodies with fresh perspectives, elevating familiar classics with masterful musical emotion and storytelling.

A Jazz Museum’s Touch

The concert is a collaboration between the esteemed National Jazz Museum in Harlem and IMG Artists, a global leader in performing arts management. The National Jazz Museum, helmed by Artistic Directors Jon Batiste and Christian McBride, seeks to preserve, promote and present jazz through knowledge, appreciation and celebration. Affiliated with the Smithsonian Institute, the museum has curated an event that pays homage to both Disney’s cultural impact and the rich heritage of jazz in America.
