Karin Buer

Karin Buer holds degrees in Music Theory (MM – CU Boulder) and Piano Performance (MM – CU Boulder, BM – St. Olaf College). She is currently working toward a DA degree in Piano Performance at the University of Northern Colorado. She has performed as a soloist with the Great Falls Symphony and the St. Olaf Orchestra. She also enjoys collaborating with other musicians and has added concentrations in collaborative piano to both her undergraduate and her doctoral degrees. Most recently, she performed as guest artist with Montana’s premier professional string quartet, the Cascade Quartet.

At the university level, Buer teaches courses in Music Theory, Aural Skills, Classroom Piano and Piano Technique. She also teaches piano privately to students of all ages. She is an active member of the Music Teachers National Association and the Society for Music Theory.

Buer's research interests include theories of rhythm and meter, performance and analysis, theory pedagogy and the music of Brahms and Schumann. She has presented her research on incorporating Schenkerian analysis into the private piano studio at both local and state music conferences. She is currently working on her doctoral dissertation, titled A Language of Their Own: Musical Gestures and Intertextuality in the Piano Variations of Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, and Johannes Brahms.
