Guest Recital (2019)

Renowned klezmer fiddler Alicia Svigals, jazz pianist Uli Geissendoerfer and College of Music Associate Professor Yonatan Malin bring archival material from the Soviet Jewish ethnomusicologist Moshe Beregovski to life. Join us for stories of the deep and ecstatic music of Jewish Eastern Europe, blending historical recordings with contemporary arrangements.

This concert is generously sponsored by the Archive Transformed Project at CU Boulder; it is the opening event for the 2019 Archive Transformed Residency.

Performance date and time:

Sunday, May 19, 7:00 p.m.

Program:

The concert will celebrate the work of Moshe Beregovski, an ethnomusicologist who set out in the 1930s to collect and preserve the deep and rich Jewish musical tradition around him. On what turned out to be the eve of the destruction of European Jewry, Beregovski managed to save thousands of beautiful folk songs, klezmer dance tunes and religious melodies on wax cylinders, the medium of the day. At the end of the concert, string players from Boulder Suzuki Strings, the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras and the College of Music will join Svigals, Geissendoerfer and Malin for an imaginative recreation of the 1937 Kiev State Ensemble of Jewish Folk Music.
