Isaac Stern was born in the Ukraine and was moved to San Francisco as an infant. After an extensive musical education, he became one of the most celebrated violinists of modern times. In 1960, Stern formed a trio with pianist Eugene Istomin and cellist Leonard Rose. He also contributed to saving Carnegie Hall from demolition, helped establish the NEA and was responsible for "discovering" Yo-Yo Ma.
Eugene Istomin is acknowledged to have been one of the twentieth century's leading pianists. A rare combination of virtuosity, poetic insight, and aristocratic style brought him international acclaim as a recitalist, orchestral soloist, and chamber musician.
