  • Presented by: CU Boulder College of Music

The Department of Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts and the College of Music present a special screening of the 1961 film "West Side Story." Winner of 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and of a special achievement Oscar for choreography, "West Side Story" is the most honored musical film in Hollywood history. Film historian and Chair of the Department of Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts Ernesto Acevedo-Muñoz—author of the only scholarly book on the film—offers a brief presentation on the challenges of adapting "West Side Story" to the screen, the changes made to the song order and lyrics, and the controversy surrounding "ghost singers" and casting. The stage director of Eklund Opera Program's new production of "West Side Story," Leigh Holman, and piano professor and Bernstein specialist Andrew Cooperstock join for a panel discussion on the movie’s impact, popularity, controversy and longevity with American audiences. Learn more about CU Bernstein at 100 at colorado.edu/event/bernstein
