La Lettre du Jardinier

Henry Bataille (1872-1922)

I take up my pen to give you news
Of the garden.  It is very pretty at the moment.
If you come at Easter or later after the spring,
You will see it.  It rose this morning
All damp from your memory.  In it are quantities
Of the flowers you recommended to me:
A provincial weave of pansies,
Cakes of roses everything everywhere,
The crumbled ash of lilac, so gay,
And the soft-bodied wisteria
Which you call:  floating flowers,
The paralyzed lily dying before my door,
There are flowers and more flowers of every kind!
Fro the blue flies they call forget-me-not
To the pink butterflies of the peach trees.  The irises
And gladioli are flowering this year and form
Here and there profusion of rockets and spindles.
But all this is languishing for want of madamoiselle,
And although the weather has been fine since Christmas last,
Joy is waiting to come until you come.
Hence the melancholy that we here all feel
For a tree with no nest, for the garden without you.
Please accept, Mademoiselle, all my memories.
