Much Ado About Nothing
Fully remote program available: September 2020 through April 2021
Performance: 45 minutes
Workshops: 50 minutes
Grades: 6+
In Shakespeare’s comedy Much Ado About Nothing, "frenemies" Beatrice and Benedick are known for their constant verbal sparring, and their friends manipulate them into confessing their mutual affections. In the meantime, Don John fabricates a false rumor about Hero’s reputation, which leaves her publicly humiliated on her wedding day.
This play explores the power of words, especially in terms of rumors and gossip. When does a "merry war" turn hostile? When does teasing go too far? What kind of damage can rumors cause? This play engages students with questions about the cycle of violence, cyberbullying, and the negative impact of gossip on a community.
Performance
"Much Ado About Nothing" was rehearsed and filmed with a small cast and rigorous safety protocols in our home theatre—the Mary Rippon Outdoor Theatre—to share with you and your students. The production is similar to what we would have performed live at your school, but can be delivered digitally. We will share a link and password with you and your team 1 to 2 weeks prior to your scheduled workshops so that everyone can watch on a flexible schedule.
Workshops
Our actors will facilitate real-time, interactive, virtual workshops with your students who can participate individually from home or in group, in-person classrooms. Workshops will focus on the impact of gossip culture on a community and use roleplay scenarios from the play to practice creative alternatives to violence.
A pre-recorded version of the workshop will be made available as a backup in case of technical barriers.
Pricing
Packages begin at $200.00, with subsidy funding available thanks to generous sponsors. Please let us know what your school’s budget can support.
