Original Practices Workshop!

Ages: 12  to 18
Teacher: Sean Scrutchins
Date: Mondays, February 8 through 22, 2021 (3 weeks)
Time: 5:00pm to 6:30pm
Location: Zoom
Tuition: $75.00 (scholarships available)
Description: Back by popular demand! A bold experiment for 2021—can we adapt the ways Shakespeare’s acting company rehearsed and performed his plays to a very modern digital space? Hint: yes, we can! CSF teaching artist Sean Scrutchins will guide you through a semi-Elizabethan rehearsal process of selected scenes from The Winter’s Tale. Participants will learn about “original practices,” cue scripts, and working creatively with each other to find new (dare we say original?) ways to translate these practices to a Zoom screen. The class will culminate in an informal, virtual showing (no memorization required) for friends and families on Feb. 22. Open to students of all experience levels and abilities.

Playwriting with a Partner!

Ages: 14 to 18
Teacher: Heidi Schmidt, CSF's Resident Dramaturg
Dates: Saturdays, April 3 through 17 (3 weeks)
Time: 10:00am to 12:00pm
Location: Zoom
Tuition: $85.00
Description: Have you heard how Shakespeare used his pandemic isolation time to write King Lear? (We won’t be doing that.) Have you heard that Shakespeare collaborated with other playwrights on many of his plays? We WILL be doing that. Students in this 3-week workshop will co-write a short, 10-minute play with a partner, inspired by a Shakespeare play and its characters’ offstage lives (before, during, or after Shakespeare’s version). During the final class, we’ll perform informal readings of 2 to 3 plays for friends and family.
