Dark Wood
Jennifer Higdon (b. 1962)
Dark Wood is a work that features the bassoon ... a wonderful instrument that does not have a tremendous amount of chamber literature. I wanted to create a work that features the bassoon prominently, but also respects it within the framework of a true chamber dialogue (along with its partners, the violin, cello and piano). Since much of the literature for this beautiful instrument is slow moving, I made the conscious decision to explore its virtuosic abilities. While there is slow music within the piece, there is an emphasis on real “bite” within the language, rhythm and tempi.
The title refers to the beauty of the bassoon’s wood.
Dark Wood was commissioned in 2001 by St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, with funds provided by The Jerome Foundation. —Program note by Jennifer Higdon
Out of the Depths — Sextet for Oboe, Bassoon and String Quartet (World Premiere)
Korine Fujiwara
De profundis clamavi ad te, Domine:
Domine, exaudi vocem meam.
Fiant aures tuae intendentes:
in vocem deprecationis meae.
Out of the depths I have cried to thee, O Lord:
Lord, hear my voice.
Let thy ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplications.
—From Psalm 130 KJV
The little cares that fretted me
I lost them yesterday,
Among the fields above the sea,
Among the winds at play
—From Out in the Fields, Elizabeth Barrett Browning
The prayer De profundis clamavi ad te, Domine is a regular part of Jewish, Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican and other Protestant liturgies.
Out of the Depths was inspired by this psalm, the timeless beauty of Josquin des Prez’ motet De profundis clamavi, and the words of Elizabeth Barrett Browning in her poem Out in the Fields. When life’s big events hit hard and fast, and the metaphorical (and occasionally literal) dust settles, the personal journey of self-examination involving faith, spirituality, and purpose canleave one with clarity about things that truly matter.
Out of the Depths was commissioned in 2021 by Yoshi Ishikawa, with funds provided by the Roser Visiting Artists Program.
