While TikTok, with one billion users across 154 countries, became the most downloaded app during the pandemic, YouTube held steady as the number one destination for music search and discovery. Both platforms were fined millions by the Federal Trade Commission in 2019 for accusations of violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. The choreography of 14-year-old Jalaiah Harmon drove attention to K-CAMP's hit "Loyalty (Renegade)," but Black girls get no love and little profit for their taste-making on the musical Internet. Through YouTube case studies and based on  her forthcoming book, “PLAYED: How Music Orchestrates Violence Against Black Girls Online,” Dr. Kyra Gaunt exposes the adverse consequences of tweens twerking in bedroom musical play.

The American Music Research Center (AMRC) is dedicated to exploring and celebrating the diverse and rich traditions of American music. Jointly housed between the the University of Colorado’s College of Music and the University Libraries, the AMRC is home to a rare music repository that includes scores, papers, recordings, and material artifacts that document the history of American music and the people who have made it.
