  • Runtime: 90 minutes

Thelonious Monk, African American jazz icon and genius, transformed the uncomfortable into thoughtful, clear expressions of artistry and sound. Not only did he embrace innovation and celebrate difference, but he unapologetically shattered the status quo. Using Monk’s music and his compositional and performance styles as metaphor alongside critical race theory, Joyce McCall illustrates how his music and other cultural artifacts can assist U.S. college music programs both in confronting racism and in providing clearer paths forward to realizing substantive change.

Foundational to the world-class performances at CU Boulder’s College of Music is a dedication to scholarship. Join us for discussions with CU faculty, students and guests in a range of topics that delve into the intricacy and history of global music.
