DAILY CAMERA: Yo-Yo Ma joins classical greats on local lineup
Returning dance, world music acts on tap for next Artist Series season
Superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma, one of the most recognizable names in all of classical music, will be the marquee attraction of the 2016-17 Artist Series at the University of Colorado.
The series marks its 80th year. Dates and artists have been announced by CU Presents, the performing arts umbrella organization that manages the Artist Series and is affiliated with the College of Music.
Season tickets go on sale Monday. Dates for productions of the Eklund Opera Program and the Takács String Quartet were also announced. All Artist Series events take place at 7:30 p.m. at Macky Auditorium. Single tickets are available on Aug. 15.
CU Presents’ executive director, Joan McLean Braun, spoke with the Daily Camera in advance of the announcement. She said that the 80th anniversary season was a compelling reason to bring an artist of Ma’s level to the series.
“He’s an artist of such stature that he can’t accommodate all requests,” she said. “But our track record of providing a well-managed, positive experience for performers is impeccable.”
Ma will appear on Wednesday, Feb. 22. His recital is available as an add-on starting at $60 for season subscribers.
“He is a great artist and great human being, with immense talent, heart and graciousness,” Braun said.
