Macbeth

When three witches deliver a prophecy in three parts to General Macbeth, he faces a choice: Should he let destiny take its course or conspire with his wife to pursue fortune’s favor on his own? But what’s done cannot be undone, and his decision sets off a scorching, action-packed descent into darkness. Fates and fantasies collide in Shakespeare’s sexy and spellbinding tragedy.

Since 1958, the Colorado Shakespeare Festival has delighted audiences with professional theatre on the CU Boulder campus. All productions will occur in the comfortable indoor Roe Green Theatre this season.

The Merry Wives of Windsor

A delightfully naughty romp! The infamous Falstaff is on the hunt for a wealthy wife (or two) to woo in order to finance his next wave of frivolity and fun. But when he sets his sights on the clever and quick-witted Mistresses Page and Ford, he gets a bit more than he bargained for.

The Conversation Series

This collaborative, immersive work, performed by two men with different racial and cultural backgrounds, is an ongoing and always shifting dance-quilt, confronting and celebrating heritage, resilience, justice and hope. Activating technologies of the body, tools and toys in a non-colonizing fashion, this work centers belonging as a way to disrupt the erasure of silenced stories and forge paths towards justice/equitable landscapes. The Conversation Series: Stitching the Geopolitical Quilt to Re-Body Belonging is a dynamic intersection of contemporary dance, performance art, technology (video and interactive gaming), music, fashion and design.

This premiere performance will feature sections inspired by conversations with Colorado state residents between 2021 and 2024 during community programs and workshops organized in collaboration with The Collective Community Arts Gallery (Lafayette), Mi Chantli Art & Movement Sanctuary (Boulder), CU Boulder (Boulder), Dance Initiative and the LaunchPad (Carbondale), University of Colorado - Colorado Springs Visual and Performing Arts (Colorado Springs), Lafayette Youth Advisory Commission (LYAC) (Lafayette), and RedLine Contemporary Arts Center (Denver). Each performance will be followed by Q & A sessions with the artist and special guests. This event is the feature program for the annual (un)WRAP series.

Let the Right One In

Oskar is a bullied, lonely teenage boy living with his mother on a housing estate at the edge of town when a spate of sinister killings rock the neighborhood. Eli is the young girl who has just moved in next door. She doesn’t go to school and never leaves the flat by day. Sensing in each other a kindred spirit, the two become devoted friends. What Oskar doesn’t know is that Eli has been a teenager for an awfully long time.

Quartet Integra

Quartet Integra is quickly developing a prestigious international reputation. The quartet won Second Prize and the coveted Audience Award at the 2022 ARD International Music Competition, First Prize at the 2021 Bartók World Competition and the Beethoven Prize and the Grand Prix Award at the 2019 Akiyoshidai Music Competition. Coming up, the quartet will present some 20 performances throughout Japan at venues such as Tokyo Opera City, Toppan Hall and Suntory Hall. Quartet members are currently enrolled in the Chamber Ensemble-in-Residence Program at the Colburn School.

Antigone

Experience a timeless narrative of love, rebellion and the indomitable will to challenge authority in Jean Anouilh’s gripping adaptation of “Antigone.” Penned in the shadows of Nazi-occupied France, this version of the age-old saga echoes with defiance against oppressive regimes. Anouilh’s masterful reimagining of Sophocles’ drama offers a potent commentary on the human spirit’s unwavering quest for justice. 

“Antigone” is the 2024-25 Roe Green Production. The CU Department of Theatre & Dance is grateful to donor Roe Green. The Roe Green Visiting Theatre Artist fund allows them to invite professional guest artists to campus each year to work with students.

But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend, the dark and sexy stranger J.D., who plans to put the Heathers in their place—six feet under. Based on the classic 1989 film.

Renée Fleming, soprano

John Proctor is the Villain

At a rural high school in Georgia, a group of lively teens are studying “The Crucible” while navigating young love, sex ed and a few school scandals. Holding a contemporary lens to the American classic, they begin to question who is really the hero and what is the truth, discovering their own power in the process. Alternately touching and bitingly funny, this comedy captures a generation in mid-transformation, running on pop music, optimism and fury, writing their coming-of-age story.

Something Rotten!

It’s the 1590s. Brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

Martha Graham Dance Company

Martha Graham is recognized as a primal artistic force of the 20th century, alongside Picasso, James Joyce, Stravinsky and Frank Lloyd Wright. Macbeth

The Merry Wives of Windsor

A delightfully naughty romp! The infamous Falstaff is on the hunt for a wealthy wife (or two) to woo in order to finance his next wave of frivolity and fun. But when he sets his sights on the clever and quick-witted Mistresses Page and Ford, he gets a bit more than he bargained for.

The Conversation Series

This collaborative, immersive work, performed by two men with different racial and cultural backgrounds, is an ongoing and always shifting dance-quilt, confronting and celebrating heritage, resilience, justice and hope. Activating technologies of the body, tools and toys in a non-colonizing fashion, this work centers belonging as a way to disrupt the erasure of silenced stories and forge paths towards justice/equitable landscapes. The Conversation Series: Stitching the Geopolitical Quilt to Re-Body Belonging is a dynamic intersection of contemporary dance, performance art, technology (video and interactive gaming), music, fashion and design.

This premiere performance will feature sections inspired by conversations with Colorado state residents between 2021 and 2024 during community programs and workshops organized in collaboration with The Collective Community Arts Gallery (Lafayette), Mi Chantli Art & Movement Sanctuary (Boulder), CU Boulder (Boulder), Dance Initiative and the LaunchPad (Carbondale), University of Colorado - Colorado Springs Visual and Performing Arts (Colorado Springs), Lafayette Youth Advisory Commission (LYAC) (Lafayette), and RedLine Contemporary Arts Center (Denver). Each performance will be followed by Q & A sessions with the artist and special guests. This event is the feature program for the annual (un)WRAP series.

Let the Right One In

Oskar is a bullied, lonely teenage boy living with his mother on a housing estate at the edge of town when a spate of sinister killings rock the neighborhood. Eli is the young girl who has just moved in next door. She doesn’t go to school and never leaves the flat by day. Sensing in each other a kindred spirit, the two become devoted friends. What Oskar doesn’t know is that Eli has been a teenager for an awfully long time.

Quartet Integra

Quartet Integra is quickly developing a prestigious international reputation. The quartet won Second Prize and the coveted Audience Award at the 2022 ARD International Music Competition, First Prize at the 2021 Bartók World Competition and the Beethoven Prize and the Grand Prix Award at the 2019 Akiyoshidai Music Competition. Coming up, the quartet will present some 20 performances throughout Japan at venues such as Tokyo Opera City, Toppan Hall and Suntory Hall. Quartet members are currently enrolled in the Chamber Ensemble-in-Residence Program at the Colburn School.

Antigone

Experience a timeless narrative of love, rebellion and the indomitable will to challenge authority in Jean Anouilh’s gripping adaptation of “Antigone.” Penned in the shadows of Nazi-occupied France, this version of the age-old saga echoes with defiance against oppressive regimes. Anouilh’s masterful reimagining of Sophocles’ drama offers a potent commentary on the human spirit’s unwavering quest for justice. 

“Antigone” is the 2024-25 Roe Green Production. The CU Department of Theatre & Dance is grateful to donor Roe Green. The Roe Green Visiting Theatre Artist fund allows them to invite professional guest artists to campus each year to work with students.

Renée Fleming, soprano

Kennedy Center honoree and five-time Grammy Award winner Renée Fleming is one of the most celebrated sopranos of our time. The only classical artist ever to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl, she performs regularly in the world’s greatest opera houses and concert halls. John Proctor is the Villain

At a rural high school in Georgia, a group of lively teens are studying “The Crucible” while navigating young love, sex ed and a few school scandals. Holding a contemporary lens to the American classic, they begin to question who is really the hero and what is the truth, discovering their own power in the process. Alternately touching and bitingly funny, this comedy captures a generation in mid-transformation, running on pop music, optimism and fury, writing their coming-of-age story.

Something Rotten!

It’s the 1590s. Brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

Based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed film directed by Tim Burton, “Big Fish” tells the story of Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest … and then some! Edward’s incredible, larger-than-life stories thrill everyone around him—most of all, his devoted wife Sandra. But their son Will, about to have a child of his own, is determined to find the truth behind his father’s epic tales. Overflowing with heart and humor, “Big Fish” is an extraordinary musical that reminds us why we love going to the theatre—for an experience that’s richer, funnier and bigger than life itself.

Martha Graham Dance Company

Martha Graham is recognized as a primal artistic force of the 20th century, alongside Picasso, James Joyce, Stravinsky and Frank Lloyd Wright. Diverse sources—including modern painting, the American frontier, religious ceremonies of Native Americans and Greek mythology—inspired her ballets.
