RUBBERBANDance (2018)

“Illuminating.”—The Boston Globe

Embracing Artistic Director Victor Quijada's unusual journey from the streets of Los Angeles to the barre, Montreal-based RUBBERBANDance uses the spontaneity of Hip-Hop, the refinement of ballet and the expressiveness of contemporary dance to create fresh, dynamic works.

The fruit of a unique meeting between classical ballet and 1990s West-Coast Hip Hop, for the past fifteen years, RUBBERBANDance Group has been redrawing the boundaries of contemporary dance with its singular language.

Sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, Vic’s Mix spans the immense creative territory of Victor Quijada, extracting a number of jewels from the choreographer’s repertoire. Remixing his own work and orchestrating the clash of urban pop and classical composition, Victor continues to experiment here, challenging notions of theatricality and audience reception, ensuring that each of the bodies moving onstage in these highly athletic tableaus exemplifies the RUBBERBANDance Method.

A reflection of the freedom and openness of the ebullient Montreal dance scene, Vic’s Mix is sure to astonish by its stylistic breadth.

Vic’s Mix premiered in June 2016 at the Festival international DansEncore in the Salle Anaïs-Allard-Rousseau of the Maison de la Culture.

News and Reviews

“A dancer starts out as a b-boy, forms his own post-hip-hop dance company at 26 and gets a commission from a classical ballet company at 30. Not a common progression in the dance world, but it is Victor Quijada’s story.”

The New York Times

News and Reviews

“[T]he company's style is vividly and intelligently rooted. Super-stretched jumps morph into crouching rolls; top-rocking footwork muscles in on high stepping bourrées; and below the movement's surface, silky classical phrasing is worked into the choppy rhythms of street dance.”
