The Popular Mechanicals (2020)

"A funny thing happened to me on the way to the theatre."

Shakespeare’s greatest clowns—the popular mechanicals from "A Midsummer Night’s Dream"—take center stage in a riotously funny imagining of life behind the scenes during rehearsals for "Pyramus and Thisbe." Complete with Shakespearean verse, clowning, vaudeville, slapstick, farce and standup comedy, this unhinged feast of wit and profanity is sure to leave you in stitches.

Iain Court directs a cast of CU Theatre & Dance's talented student performers. Don't wait to purchase tickets! Due to limited seating, tickets sell fast. But in the intimate Loft Theatre, every audience member gets a front row experience to this play.

Q&A with “The Popular Mechanicals” Director of Dance Production Iain Court

"Out of a season of Shakespeare with some of Australia’s best actors and directors came a jig—a traditional Elizabethan after piece in improvised doggerel—and the inventive brilliance of these clowns transformed into 'The Popular Mechanicals.'"

‘The Popular Mechanicals’ to bring laughs to the Loft Theater

"While 'The Popular Mechanicals' is indeed a comedy, the humor in this show is varied and intense. The staging pulls from specific eras in comedy, like a stand-up routine inspired by Dean Martin’s work in the 1950s."
