Andrea Segar

Violinist Andrea Segar, praised for her “sultry sound and chops” by San Francisco Classical Voice, enjoys a varied career as a soloist, chamber musician and educator.

As a soloist, Segar has appeared with ensembles across the country including the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Portland Symphony, Arizona Musicfest Orchestra, Oakland East Bay Symphony, ProArt Symphony and the New England Conservatory Bach Ensemble. She has performed at venues such as the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and Jordan Hall in Boston. Segar’s love for early 20th-century violin and piano music led to her ongoing recital series, “The Decade Project.” She has performed recitals in the United States, United Kingdom and Mexico. Segar’s competition awards include first prizes in the Washington International String Competition and the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) National Solo Competition. Her performances have aired on NPR’s Performance Today and classical radio stations nationwide.

Before joining the faculty at the University of Colorado Boulder, Segar was the first violinist of the Lydian String Quartet, in residence at Brandeis University. With the quartet, she performed across the United States and Taiwan, premiering works by composers including Vijay Iyer, Kurt Rohde and Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon. Her discography with the Lydian Quartet includes quartets by Henri Lazarof and Yu-Hui Chang with an upcoming release of works by John Harbison.

Segar’s chamber music collaborations include performances with members of the Emerson Quartet, Juilliard Quartet, Peabody Trio and Mendelssohn Quartet, as well as Soovin Kim, Colin Carr, Roger Tapping and Susan Narucki. Her festival appearances include Yellow Barn, Birdfoot Festival, Perlman Music Program, Music@Menlo, IMS Prussia Cove and Festival de San Miguel de Allende. She has performed as a guest with the Grammy Award-nominated ensemble A Far Cry, appearing on their recordings for Naxos and Crier Records.

A dedicated educator, Segar was selected as a “Brandeis Career Hero” by students for two consecutive years. She also received a Provost’s Teaching Innovation Grant, an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Grant and an Arts Council Grant from Brandeis University.

Segar holds degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music where she was a teaching assistant to Donald Weilerstein, and SUNY Stony Brook where she served as head violin studio teaching assistant to Philip Setzer and Soovin Kim.
