"A Community Without a Band is a Community Without a Soul" by Dr. Xóchitl C. Chávez
As gentrification in California spreads across many working-class neighborhoods real estate has deemed as up-and-coming areas, this discussion highlights the social and cultural realities of migrant community-based brass bands from Oaxaca, Mexico. Second-generation Bandas Oaxaqueñas in Los Angeles exemplify the diversity of Oaxaca’s ethnolinguistic communities and how musicians strive to maintain their ethnic identity and linguistic plurality.
Foundational to the world-class performances at CU Boulder’s College of Music is a dedication to scholarship. Join us for discussions with CU faculty, students and guests in a range of topics that delve into the intricacy and history of global music.
