Next to Normal (2018)

"There's a difference between being happy and just thinking you're happy." ~Next to Normal

Body, memory and trauma collide in this Pulitzer Prize-winning musical exploring the collateral effects of mental illness. Set to an electrifying score of rock music, this production—a collaboration between the Theatre and Dance departments—probes the reverberations of buried secrets and a craving for normalcy from the perspective of a middle class suburban family.

Marla A. Schulz directs and choreographs a cast of CU Theatre & Dance Department's outstanding musical performers. Ticket sell fast, but in the dynamic Charlotte York Irey Theatre, every audience member gets a front row experience to this award-winning musical.

"Next to Normal" is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com

Music Director’s Notes

The music in Next to Normal is extraordinary. Thisrock musical is structurally similar to an opera and the music is almost constant. I believe the best scores aurally reflect the storytelling, and Tom Kitt has done a spectacular job of just that. The subjects of trauma and mental illness are reflected with mixed meters and varying musical styles. Note the different styles Diana sings throughout the show; Kitt writes her moments of confusion and anger with strong rock, but her moment of self-reflection is a softer acoustic folk feel. The score does a brilliant job at truly reflecting the character’s stories.

It is a joy to be guest music directing this show for my friend Marla Schulz. Thank you to Marla, the cast, and crew for making an NYC girl feel welcome.
Enjoy the show!
