Together with students and other faculty, Associate Professor of Violin Harumi Rhodes—second violinist of the Takács Quartet—shares an evening of musical conversation featuring the violin in three duo combinations and ending with a chorus of string instruments. The premiere of “Under the Same Sky” by College of Music student Luka Vezmar—scored for violin and accordion—opens with a playful mix of music and theater. Two more duos are featured in the center of the program: Selections from Sofia Gubaidulina’s “Rejoice!” sonata for violin and cello; and “Sing With Me” for violin and voice by composer-vocalist, activist, educator and College of Music doctoral student Nicholas Felder.
Michi Wiancko’s “La Follia Variations” for string orchestra incorporates modern techniques and textures while paying homage to Early Music aesthetics. When describing this piece, Wiancko says, “I intended to highlight my favorite aspects of the music made 300 years ago—aspects which still resonate strongly with us today: Passion, improvisation, intimacy and the occasional moment of irreverence.”
