Richard II

Jul 5-Aug 10, 2025

Richard II

When corrupt, despotic King Richard II ventures off to wage war, the banished Bolingbroke invades to reclaim his stolen inheritance. Embraced by an angry populace and co-opted by self-righteous, greedy nobles, he takes the throne and sets the stage for 32 years of civil war. The first chapter of Shakespeare’s four-part “game of thrones” examines issues critical to contemporary politics, from the embrace of autocracy, the power of wealth, and whether a nation divided can stand.

Mr. Burns, a post-electric play

Feb 20-Mar 1, 2026

Mr. Burns, a post-electric play

By Anne Washburn
Score by Michael Friedman
Lyrics by Anne Washburn

After civilization collapses, a group of survivors share a campfire and begin to piece together the plot of The Simpsons episode “Cape Feare” entirely from memory. Seven years later, this and other snippets of pop culture have become the live entertainment of a post-apocalyptic society trying to hold onto its past. Seventy-five years later, these are the myths and legends from which new forms of performance are created. Anne Washburn’s imaginative, darkly comedic play with music propels us forward nearly a century, following a new civilization stumbling into its future.

Oklahoma!

Mar 6-8, 2026

Oklahoma!

Music by Richard Rogers
Books and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
Based on the play “Green Grow the Lilacs” by Lynn Riggs
Original choreography by Agnes de Mille

In a Western territory just after the turn of the 20th century, a high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys provides a colorful background for Curly, a charming cowboy, and Laurey, a feisty farm girl, to play out their love story. Their romantic journey, as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road, contrasts with the comic exploits of brazen Ado Annie and hapless Will Parker in a musical adventure embracing hope, determination and the promise of a new land. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s exuberant classic features iconic songs including “Oklahoma!,” “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top” and “People Will Say We’re in Love.”

Students of the CU Boulder College of Music Musical Theatre program perform golden-age mainstays, contemporary Broadway hits, cabaret and developing new musicals.

The Prom

The Prom

Book and lyrics by Chad Beguelin
Book by Bob Martin
Music by Matthew Sklar
Based on an original concept by Jack Viertel
Original Broadway production directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw
Originally produced on Broadway by Bill Damaschke, Dori Berinstein, Jack Lane

Four eccentric Broadway stars are in desperate need of a new stage. So when they hear that trouble is brewing around a small-town prom, they know that it’s time to put a spotlight on the issue—and themselves. The town’s parents want to keep the high school dance on the straight and narrow—but when one student just wants to bring her girlfriend to prom, the entire town has a date with destiny. “The Prom” expertly captures all the humor and heart of a classic musical comedy with a message that resonates with audiences now more than ever.

The Cunning Little Vixen

Follow the adventures of Vixen Sharp Ears, a spirited young fox, as she draws you into her forest world; and meet a cast of woodland creatures and the humans they cross paths with in a series of quick, dreamlike scenes. Leoš Janáček’s music, full of vibrant folk melodies and lush sounds, paints a picture of life in the woods—the joy and the sorrow, the turning of the seasons. It’s a story that feels like a fairy tale, but dig a little deeper and you’ll find themes of life, loss and the wild beauty of it all.

Great repertoire, beautiful scenery, amazing voices and outstanding value—these are the hallmarks of the CU Boulder College of Music Eklund Opera Program. Director Leigh Holman and Music Director Nicholas Carthy bring you the best of classical and contemporary opera.

Great repertoire, beautiful scenery, amazing voices and outstanding value—these are the hallmarks of the CU Boulder College of Music Eklund Opera Program. Director Leigh Holman and Music Director Nicholas Carthy bring you the best of classical and contemporary opera.

Book and lyrics by Chad Beguelin
Book by Bob Martin
