Disguised as the boy Cesario, she is sent by Duke Orsino to woo the Countess Olivia, who instead falls for the messenger. A wise fool, mistaken identity, and ultimately, love, make for a classic, beloved comedy.

Julius Caesar
Jun 13-Aug 2, 2026
Julius Caesar
Fearing that Julius Caesar, returning to Rome after triumph in battle, will seize total power, Rome’s elite plot his murder. After Caesar dies at the hand of his friend Brutus, his successor Mark Antony drives the conspirators out of Rome and defeats them in battle, leaving him to rule. This production spotlights the insidious effects of patriarchy, while Shakespeare’s portrayal of ambition, power and betrayal make for an unsettling parallel between ancient Rome and contemporary culture.
Since 1958, the Colorado Shakespeare Festival has enchanted audiences with world-class theatre on the University of Colorado Boulder campus. Make Shakespeare part of your Colorado summer in the elegant, climate-controlled Roe Green Indoor Theatre.

Shakespeare in Love
Jun 27-Aug 1, 2026
Shakespeare in Love
Based on the screenplay by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard
Adapted for the stage by Lee Hall
Music by Paddy Cunneen
Penniless and paralyzed by writer’s block, young Will Shakespeare finds his muse in Viola de Lesseps, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant and passionate lover of poetry and theater. Betrothed to the power- and money-hungry Lord Wessex, Viola surrenders to passion with the playwright, inspiring his famous tale of star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet. But this clever, contemporary stage production of the Oscar-winning film is no tragedy. It’s loaded with laughs — and Easter eggs — for Shakespeare lovers of all ages.
Since 1958, the Colorado Shakespeare Festival has enchanted audiences with world-class theatre on the University of Colorado Boulder campus. This summer, make Shakespeare under the stars your can’t-miss tradition as we return to the beautifully renovated historic Mary Rippon Outdoor Theatre—with complimentary seatbacks for your comfort.

Friends/Romans/Countrymen
Jul 11-Aug 1, 2026
Friends/Romans/Countrymen
By David Davalos
A struggling poet named Virgil bumps into Julius Caesar and accidentally creates the Roman Empire in this world-premier, comical-historical take on Shakespeare’s tragic history Julius Caesar. Shifting perspective toward peripheral characters, David Davalos’ supernatural fable of sooth and consequence leans into the laughter — after all, the fall and rise of Caesar weren’t exactly a tragedy for every Roman citizen.

The Olive Tree
Nov 7-16, 2025
The Olive Tree
”The Olive Tree“ is a spellbinding new live-looping musical—a tale of resistance, resilience and collective liberation. In a world teetering on the brink of annihilation, young Reem embarks on a perilous journey. Her dying father’s final command reverberates in her soul. She must recall a forgotten truth, awaken her dormant magic and stop the world-ending war that threatens everything she holds dear.
From the depths of the unknown to the towering peaks of oppression, Reem faces impossible odds, unraveling secrets long buried and forging unlikely alliances. With every step, her magic grows, as does the storm gathering around her. The stakes couldn’t be higher: The fate of the world rests in her hands.

Cabaret
Book by Joe Masteroff

stories by Christopher Isherwood
Music by John Kander
Lyrics by Fred Ebb
As the 1920s draw to a close, in Berlin’s seedy Kit Kat Klub a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the cabaret. Daring, provocative and exuberantly entertaining, “Cabaret” explores the dark, heady and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich.

Ruckus and Keir GoGwilt
Jan 23, 2026
Ruckus and Keir GoGwilt
Weaving together jubilant, hard-driving and nostalgic tunes into large-scale dramatic forms, Ruckus and Keir GoGwilt bring the centuries-old tradition of blending folk and art music into the present day. As early as the 17th century, Italian musicians began working in the courts of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. And so, the radiant sonatas of Arcangelo Corelli make for a thrilling partner to the earthy dances of Neil Gow, who earned the nickname of “The Scottish Corelli." Ruckus highlights this historical bridge between two seemingly disparate worlds, uniting the energy of the pub with the elegance of the court.

Mr. Burns, a post-electric play

Mr. Burns, a post-electric play
By Anne Washburn
Score by Michael Friedman
Lyrics by Anne Washburn
After civilization collapses, a group of survivors share a campfire and begin to piece together the plot of The Simpsons episode “Cape Feare” entirely from memory. Seven years later, this and other snippets of pop culture have become the live entertainment of a post-apocalyptic society trying to hold onto its past. Seventy-five years later, these are the myths and legends from which new forms of performance are created. Anne Washburn’s imaginative, darkly comedic play with music propels us forward nearly a century, following a new civilization stumbling into its future.

Oklahoma!

Oklahoma!
Music by Richard Rogers
Books and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
Based on the play “Green Grow the Lilacs” by Lynn Riggs
Original choreography by Agnes de Mille
In a Western territory just after the turn of the 20th century, a high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys provides a colorful background for Curly, a charming cowboy, and Laurey, a feisty farm girl, to play out their love story. Their romantic journey, as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road, contrasts with the comic exploits of brazen Ado Annie and hapless Will Parker in a musical adventure embracing hope, determination and the promise of a new land. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s exuberant classic features iconic songs including “Oklahoma!,” “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top” and “People Will Say We’re in Love.”
Students of the CU Boulder College of Music Musical Theatre program perform golden-age mainstays, contemporary Broadway hits, cabaret and developing new musicals.

Shakespeare in Love

“The Olive Tree” is the 2025-26 Roe Green Production. The CU Boulder Department of Theatre & Dance is grateful to donor Roe Green. The Roe Green Visiting Theatre Artist fund makes it possible to invite professional guest artists to campus each year to collaborate with students.
Presented by the CU Boulder College of Arts and Sciences Department of Theatre & Dance.

stories by Christopher Isherwood
